A few wise words can have a lasting impact on thousands

Catholic Mission is inviting supporters this week to share some wise words and consider their legacy, as Include a Charity Week got underway on Monday.

The mission organisation is one of over 100 charities working together to remind Australians that wise words can have a lasting impact on future generations, just like a gift in a will.

‘Catholic Mission receives no government funding, so we rely on the wisdom and generosity of our donors, particularly through gifts in their wills, to continue supporting thousands of people in need, in Australia and around the world,’ says Father Brian Lucas, Catholic Mission’s National Director.

An initiative of the Fundraising Institute of Australia, Include a Charity Week aims to raise awareness of the impact of bequests, which constitute a large share of the income of most charities.

‘We support projects in 1,100 dioceses around the world,’ says Father Lucas. ‘But without legacies, the impact of our work would not be as far-reaching. That’s why we are proud to be a part of this campaign.’

This year, Include a Charity Week is asking Australians for the wise words they would leave with their loved ones. Across social media, Australians are sharing their #WiseWords2017.

So, what pearls of wisdom will Father Lucas pass on? ‘I think back to the words of my father whenever we wanted something we shouldn’t have. He would remind us of the saying, “I cried because I had no shoes, and then I met a man who had no feet.”

‘It is a reminder to always be grateful for what we have, and never turn our backs on those who are not as well off as we are.’

Supporters can share their own wise words on Catholic Mission’s Facebook page, or by using the hashtag #WiseWords2017

Father Lucas says that for such a vital means of support, leaving a gift in a will is not a complex or arduous process. ‘When you are ready, it’s as straightforward as asking your solicitor or legal advisor to show you how to include a gift to Catholic Mission,’ he says. ‘Supporters can even find the correct wording on our website.

‘This Include a Charity Week, we ask you to consider, after you have taken care of your family and friends, a gift in your will that will have a lasting impact and help our work live on.’
